RON HEXTALL became the third Philadelphia netminder to capture the VEZINA TROPHY, while becoming just the 10th rookie in NHL history to capture the award. HEXTALL led the NHL in both wins (37) and save percentage (.902), and posted the league's third best goals-against average of 3.00. Hextall's outstanding goaltending during the regular season earned him back-up duty to Grant Fuhr in Rendez-vous '87 versus the Soviet National Team. HEXTALL would lead the Flyers to game seven of the Stanley Cup and cop the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP in the process. Mike Liut of Hartford would finish second in VEZINA voting.
