Giacomin, Eddie Villemure, Gilles New York Rangers 1970-71
The combination of ED GIACOMIN and GILLES VILLEMURE earned the New York Rangers only their second VEZINA TROPHY in club history. A combined 2.26 goals-against average with 177 goals against topped all NHL netminders and led the Rangers to team records of 49 wins and 109 points. GIACOMIN would play 45 games, winning 27 contests, recording a 2.16 goals-against average and a league-best eight shutouts. ED also earned a berth on the First All-Star Team at season's end. VILLEMURE also played an integral role with a record 22-8-4, four shutouts and a 2.30 goals-against average. Last year's VEZINA winner Tony Esposito of Chicago was the trophy's runner-up.
