TERRY SAWCHUK became just the third goaltender in VEZINA TROPHY history to win the award in consecutive seasons, joining George Hainsworth and Bill Durnan. The Red Wings finished the regular season first overall in the standings for the fifth straight year. They also lost only five games at home and posted a 15-game undefeated streak. SAWCHUK would play 63 of Detroit's 70 games, allowing 120 goals for the top goals-against average in the league at 1.90. Along with his nine shutouts, he would also record an NHL-best 32 victories and was named to the NHL's First All-Star Team. Gerry McNeil of the Canadiens was the trophy's runner-up.
