In perhaps one of the greatest seasons ever recorded by a goaltender, sophomore TERRY SAWCHUK captured his first VEZINA TROPHY as the NHL's top goaltender and was named to the First All-Star Team at season's end. Playing in all 70 of the Red Wings games during their fourth consecutive regular season championship, SAWCHUK led the league in all major statistical goaltender categories, including games played (70), minutes played (4,200), wins (44), goals-against average (1.90) and a Wings team record in shutouts (12). After a club-record 44 wins and a season high shutout sequence of 214 minutes and 22 seconds, TERRY would produce a near-flawless performance in the playoffs, winning eight straight games with four shutouts and a 0.63 goals-against average to capture the Stanley Cup title. Al Rollins of Toronto finished second in the VEZINA race.
