New York Rangers
1939-40

For the first time in the trophy's short 14-year history, a New York Rangers goaltender took home the honours, as DAVE KERR and his teammates combined to allow a mere 77 goals against during the regular season. Although finishing in second place to the defending Cup champion Boston Bruins, the Rangers went on a tear during the middle of the season, setting a new NHL record by going unbeaten in 19 consecutive games, bettering the mark of 18 set by the 1927-28 Montreal Canadiens. KERR played in every game for the Blueshirts, earning a record of 27-11-10 with a NHL leading eight shutouts and a 1.54 goals-against average - stats that earned him a berth on the First All-Star Team. Frank Brimsek of Boston was named the trophy's runner-up.
