Due to a flu epidemic, Seattle health officials were forced to cancel the series between the Montreal Canadiens and Seattle Metropolitans after game five with the series deadlocked. Both teams had won two, lost two and tied one. To that point, Seattle's Frank Foyston had scored nine times and Newsy Lalonde of the Canadiens had scored six times. But several players on both teams became seriously ill, including Canadiens' defenseman Joe Hall, who died less than a week after the series was cancelled.
