The Detroit Red Wings earned their fifth franchise Presidents Trophy leading the league with a commanding 124 points under new head coach Mike Babcock. The Red Wings began the season with a strong start winning 11 of 12 games in the month of October. Throughout the season their success continued and the team clinched the Presidents Trophy on April 11th 2006 with a 2-0 win over the Edmonton Oilers. Pavel Datsyuk led the Red Wings in points with 87, while Nicklas Lidstrom continued his thriving career leading all skaters in average ice time with 28.06 minutes per game.
