The inaugural winner of the King Clancy Memorial Award for the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and has made a noteworthy contribution in his community was Lanny McDonald of the Calgary Flames. The NHL veteran was a long-time supporter of charities in both Toronto and Calgary, most notably the Canadian Special Olympics. McDonald spent time as the Head Coach of the Special Olympics floor hockey team and was Co-Chairman of the fundraising program in 1988. As well in 1988, he served as the Co-Chairman of the Alberta Children's Miracle Network Telethon.
