BOBBY KROMM became the first Red Wings coach to win the JACK ADAMS AWARD. Detroit won 32 games and tied 14 while recording 78 points only to finish second to Montreal in the Norris Division. The Red Wings had finished last in the Norris Division with only 16 wins the previous year. The turn around in the team's good fortune was measured by a 37-point increase in the standings. Boston's Don Cherry was voted the trophy's runner-up.
