They called him 'Big Train.' ERIC VAIL, born in Timmins, Ontario, was the 21st pick in the 1973 Entry Draft, going to the Atlanta Flames. He played 23 games for the fledgling franchise that fall, but didn't show the scoring touch he had exhibited in junior hockey, scoring just two goals and nine assists. Then, VAIL exploded in 1974-75. He dangled and dipsy-doodled, scoring 39 goals and 21 assists for 60 points. The NHL selected ERIC VAIL as the 1974-75 winner of the CALDER TROPHY, with Pierre Larouche of the Penguins coming in second.
