The Detroit Red Wings captured back-to-back Campbell Bowls for the first time since 1997 and 1998, as well as their sixth in franchise history. The defending Stanley Cup champions would ultimately fall in seven games to Pittsburgh during their quest to repeat as champions, but became the first repeat Campbell Bowl winners since Dallas accomplished the feat in 1999 and 2000. The Red Wings, although not finishing first overall, were just as dominant as past seasons, finishing second in the conference to San Jose with 112 points, led by the NHL's best power play (25.5%) and face-off men (55.1%). After sweeping Columbus in the Blue Jackets' first playoff appearance and overcoming Anaheim in a tough seven game series, the Red Wings would face a young Chicago Blackhawks squad in the Western Conference Final, defeating them in overtime of game five on a goal by rookie Darren Helm.
