The Detroit Red Wings lived up to heavy expectations set after the club captured its sixth franchise Presidents' Trophy. After compiling 115 points during the regular season, the Red Wings faced-off against the Nashville Predators in the first round of the 2008 Stanley Cup playoffs. A hard-fought series saw the Predators take two games from the Red Wings before the Presidents' Trophy winners prevailed. In the second round the Red Wings, led by Johan Franzen's nine goals in four games, embarrassed the Colorado Avalanche 4-0. The Red Wings drew the Dallas Stars in the Conference Final and surprised the league by winning the first three games in commanding fashion. However, the Stars won back to back games and took the series to game six. After knocking off the Stars 4-1, Detroit captain Nicklas Lidstrom accepted the Clarence Campbell trophy on behalf of his team at the American Airlines Center in Dallas.
