Yzerman, Steve
Detroit Red Wings

After playing only 52 games during the 2001-02 NHL season and battling through injuries in the playoffs to capture the Stanley Cup, Steve Yzerman was forced to undergo knee surgery that summer in hopes of returning for his 20th year of NHL play. Yzerman's knee was so severely injured that he required an osteotomy, which is a realignment procedure, followed by eight months of arduous and at times painful rehabilitation. He made an emotional return to the Red Wings lineup on February 24, 2003, receiving a prolonged ovation from the Joe Louis Arena faithful. The Red Wings would finish the season with a 14-1-0-1 record, best in the NHL over that time, led by their captain's return.
