Westfall, Ed
New York Islanders
1976-77

After eleven years with the Bruins, concluding with a Stanley Cup victory in 1971-72, ED WESTFALL was left unprotected by Boston and claimed by the New York Islanders in the expansion draft. WESTFALL immediately stepped in and added much-needed veteran leadership to a youthful squad. The Belleville, Ontario forward had been employed as a checking centre throughout his career, but found a much needed scoring touch with the Islanders. In 1976-77, the New York Islanders finished in second place in the Patrick Division for a second straight season, led by their veteran captain. The MASTERTON TROPHY was presented to ED WESTFALL for the 1976-77 season, but really represented a long, strong career as an unsung hockey player, quietly leading his team(s) from the shadows of the superstars. WESTFALL stayed with the Islanders until retiring following the 1978-79 season, ED's 18th in the National Hockey League.
