C.J. Smith was born on December 1, 1994 in Des Moines. Iowa. A product of the Muskegon Lumberjacks and Chicago Steele of the USHL, he would go on to attend the University of Massachusetts Lowell for three seasons.

Upon completing his final collegiate campaign, in which he recorded 51 points in 41 games, Smith signed as a free agent with the Buffalo Sabres and would join the club for the remainder of the 2016-17 season. Smith would go on to appear in a pair of games for Buffalo as the season came to an end.

Smith would spend the entire 2017-18 season with the Sabres AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans. In 57 games he scored 17 times and added 27 assists for 44 points.
