Alexander Nylander was born on March 2, 1998 in Calgary, Alberta. His father, Michael, played in over 900 NHL games for multiple teams so Alexander spent much of his early life in Canada and the United States with summers in Sweden. At age 12 the Nylanders moved back to Sweden where Alexander proved to be a junior hockey standout for AIK.

In 2015-16, Nylander would return to North America and play one season of major junior with the Mississauga Steelheads of the Ontario Hockey League. In 57 games he recorded 28 goals and added 47 assists for 75 points.

Nylander was selected eighth overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and would make his North American professional debut for the club’s AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans, during the 2016-17 season. In 65 games he scored 10 times and added 18 assists. Nylander would also get a glimpse of life in the NHL during his inaugural campaign, suiting up in four games for the Sabres.
