Matthew Tkachuk was born on December 11, 1997 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Matthew is the product of a hockey family. His father, Keith, played in 1,201 NHL games and scored over 500 goals. Matthew joined the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League for the 2016-17 season and skating on a line with Mitch Marner and Christian Dvorak, recorded 107 points and helped the club to the Memorial Cup title.

Tkachuk was selected in the first round, sixth overall, by the Calgary Flames in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft and joined the club the following season. Appearing in 76 games during his first professional season Tkachuk scored 13 times and added 35 assists for 48 points. In addition, his 105 penalty minutes were the most amongst all first-year players.

In his second season in Calgary, Tkachuk found the back of the net 24 times. He followed that up with his first career 30-goal campaign. Prior to the 2018-19 season, Tkachuk was named an alternate captain of the Flames.
