Gabriel Carlsson was born on January 2, 1997 in Orebro, Sweden. A standout for Linkopings HC in the Swedish Hockey League, he was selected in the first round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Carlsson would join the Blue Jacketsí AHL affiliate, the Cleveland Monsters, for three games in the late stages of the 2016-17 season. He was quickly promoted to Columbus and joined the Blue Jackets for the final two games of the regular season. Carlsson also suited up in five post-season games in the Blue Jacketsí first round series against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

During the 2017-18 season, Carlsson would split time between Cleveland and Columbus. In 14 goals at the NHL level he recorded a pair of assists. In 33 games with the Monsters, the big defender scored twice and added three assists.
