Mathew Barzal was born on May 26, 1997 in Coquitlam, British Columbia. A product of the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League, he was selected in the first round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Islanders.

Following a strong final junior season which included 69 assists in 41 games, Barzal joined the Islanders during the closing days of the 2016-17 season. He would go on to appear in two games for the club while getting his first glimpse of life in the NHL.

Barzal cracked the Islanders opening night roster to start the 2017-18 season and would suit up in all 82 games for the club. He would go on to lead all first year players with 85 points, 20 more than his closest competitor. His 27 power-play points led all rookies and he finished second among first year forwards in ice-time per game with 17:46 minutes. At season's end Barzal received 160 of 164 first place votes, earning the Calder Trophy as the NHL's top rookie.

Barzal represented his homeland several times on the international stage, including at the 2017 World Junior Championship where he served as an alternate captain and helped lead Canada to the silver medal.
