Joonas Kemppainen was born on April 7, 1988, in Kajaani, Finland. Undrafted by an NHL club, Kemppainen played nine seasons in the Finnish Liiga with Ässät, HPK and Oulun Kärpät. He signed as a free agent with the Boston Bruins on May 21 2015.

Kemppainen made his North American debut during the 2015-16 season. He would suit up in 44 games for the Bruins, scoring a pair of goals and adding three assists. After just one season in North America, Kemppainen signed a deal with Sibir Novosibirsk of the KHL and would join the club for the 2016-17 season.

On the international stage, Kemppainen represented Finland on numerous occasions, including the 2015 World Championship and the 2006 World U18 Championship where he helped his homeland to the silver medal.
