Luke Glendening was born on April 28, 1989 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. As an undrafted free agent, Glendening harnessed his hockey career by playing four years with the University of Michigan Wolverines in the NCAA.

Upon his graduation, Glendening signed a one year contract with the Detroit Red Wings AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins on June 19, 2012. In his inaugural year with the Griffins, Glendening helped the team to a 2013 Calder Cup Championship scoring 16 points in 24 playoff games.

The following season Glendening was signed to an NHL contract with the Detroit Red Wings. During that 2013-14 season he would split time between the Griffins and the Red Wings. He would score his first career NHL goal against Carey Price in a 5-3 loss to the Montreal Canadiens on April 5, 2014.

Glendening would appear in all 82 games for the Red Wings during the 2014-15 season, registering 12 goals and six assists for 18 points. He would follow that with a 21 point season in 2015-16.
