Nicholas Paul was born on March 20, 1995, in Mississauga, Ontario. He played for the Mississauga Chargers of the OJHL before joining the Brampton Battalion of the Ontario Hockey League.

Paul was selected in the fourth round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars. On July 1, 2014, while still in junior, Paul's NHL rights were traded by the Stars along with Alex Chiasson, Alex Guptill, and a 2015 second-round pick, to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Jason Spezza and Ludwig Karlsson.

Paul would make his professional debut with the Senators' American Hockey League affiliate, the Binghamton Senators, in the 201415 season. In 45 games for the club, he scored six goals and added 11 assists in 45 games.

On February 16, 2016, Paul got his first taste of NHL action as the Senators took on the Buffalo Sabres. In total, he would appear in 24 games for the Senators during his first professional season, notching a pair of goals and adding three assists.
