Jason Dickinson was born on July 4, 1995, in Georgetown, Ontario. A product of the Guelph Storm of the Ontario Hockey League, he was selected in the first round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Dallas Stars.

Dickinson made his professional debut in the American Hockey League for the Texas Stars. He would appear in two regular-season and three post-season games for the club, recording three assists.

The 2015-16 season would be Dickinson's first full season as a professional. He spent the year predominantly with the Texas Stars where he scored 22 goals and added 31 assists in 73 games. His strong play was rewarded late in the season with his first recall to the NHL. He made his NHL debut on April 7, 2015, for the Stars in a 4-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche, recording the first goal of his NHL career along the way.
