Émile Poirier was born on December 14, 1994 in Montreal Quebec. He played junior hockey for the Gatineau Olympiques of the QMJHL where he put up impressive offensive numbers.

Poirier was selected in the first round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames and made his professional debut for the club's AHL affiliate, the Abbotsford Heat in the late stages of the 2013-14 season.

The 2014-15 season would be Poirier's first full professional campaign. In 55 games for Abbotsford he produced an impressive 42 points. His strong play was rewarded with his first recall to the NHL. He would suit up in six games for the Flames, recording his first NHL assist.
