Valeri Nichushkin was born on March 4, 1995 in Chelyabinsk, Russia. A standout in his native Russia, Nichushkin was selected in the first round, 1oth overall, by the Dallas Stars in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.

Nichushkin would join the Stars for the 2013-14 seasons, suiting up in his first game on October 3, 2013. He would score his first NHL exactly a month later against the Ottawa Senators. In total, Nichushkin would appear in 79 games for the Stars during his rookie season, scoring 14 times and adding 20 assists.

Injuries to his hip and groin would curtail Nichushkin's sophomore season. He would appear in just eight games for the Stars and five more for their AHL affiliate, recording a combined five assists.
