Jeremy Welsh was born on April 30, 1988 in Bayfield, Ontario. A product of the Oakville Blades of the OJHL, Welsh would then attend Union College for three seasons. Following his third academic season, in which he recorded 27 goals in 40 games, Welsh signed a deal with the Carolina Hurricanes and would suit up for a single game for the club at the tail end of the 2011-12 season.

Welsh would join the Charlottte Checkers of the American Hockey League for the 2012-13 season. In 69 games he recorded 14 goals and 12 assists. Welsh would also get another taste of life in the NHL. He would see the ice in five games for the Hurricanes, recording his first NHL point.
