Matt Anderson was born on October 31, 1982 in West Islip, New York. He attended in the University of Massachusetts Amherst where he played four seasons with the Minutemen.

Undrafted by an NHL club, Anderson inked a deal with the Chicago Wolves of the American Hockey League following his collegiate career. He would spend four seasons with the Wolves before signing as a free agent with the Albany Devils, the AHL affiliate of New Jersey.

On January 29, 2013, Anderson made his NHL debut for the Devils against the Boston Bruins. He would see action in one more game during the 2012-13 season and record his first NHL point in an overtime loss to the New York Islanders.

On May 5, 2013, again a free agent, Anderson signed on to join Spartak Moscow of the KHL.
