Dominik Uher was born on December 31, 1992 in Frydek-Mistek, Czech Republic. A standout minor hockey player in his homeland, he would join the Spokane Chiefs of the Western Hockey League in 2009. Uher would spend three seasons with Spokane, recording an impressive 33 goals and 35 assists in 63 games during his final year.

Uher would make his professional debut for the Wheeling Nailers of the ECHL in 2012. He would appear in three games for the club before being promoted to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. He would see the ice in 53 games for the Penguins during the 2012-13 season, scoring four times and adding three assists.

Uher would spend the entire 2013-14 with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, registering 23 points in 68 games. The following year would once again be spent at the AHL level, but Uher did receive his first taste of NHL action. He was recalled to Pittsburgh where he would appear in his first two NHL games.
