Blake Pietila was born on February 20, 1993, in Southfield, Michigan. A product of the USHL, he was selected in the fifth round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the New Jersey Devils and attended Michigan Technological University.

Following his collegiate career, Pietila made his professional debut for the Devils' AHL affiliate in Albany during the 2015-16 season. In 58 games for the club he scored 10 times and added seven assists. He made his NHL debut on March 24, 2016 and would go on to appear in seven games for New Jersey, scoring a goal and adding an assist.

On the international stage Pietila represented the United States on numerous occasions, including helping his country to gold at the the 2011 World U18 Championship and the 2013 World Junior Championship.
