John Persson was born on May 18, 1992 in Östersund, Sweden. The 6’2 left wing product of the Swedish junior leagues and the WHL’s Red Deer Rebels was drafted in the fifth round, 125th overall, by the New York Islanders in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft.

After three seasons in Red Deer, the Islanders assigned Persson to play for their AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He would play parts of the next three seasons in Bridgeport before he would make his NHL debut on March 27, 2014 in a 3-2 shootout loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Later on April 5, 2014, Persson would score his first NHL goal in a 4-3 shootout loss to the Washington Capitals.

The next year, Persson would spend his entire 2014-15 season playing in the AHL for the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. At the conclusion of his contract with the Islanders, Persson elected to return to Sweden to play in the Swedish Elite League.
