Kyle Rau was born on October 24, 1992, in Eden Prairie, Minnesota. A stand out at Eden Prairie High School, Rau was selected in the third round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft and would attend the University of Minnesota. In his final collegiate season Rau served as captain and led Minnesota to the Big Ten Conference Championship.

Rau made his professional debut in the American Hockey League for the Panthers's AHL affiliate, the San Antonio rampage in the late stages of the 2014-15 season. He would suit up in seven regular season games and one playoff game, scoring a pair of goals and adding an assist.

Rau spent the majority of the 2015-16 season with the Panthers' new AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates. In 63 games for the club, the winger scored 17 times and added 14 assists. On February 20, 2016, Rau would get his first taste of NHL action. He made his debut in a 3-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets. He would go on to appear in nine games for the Panthers over the course of the season. Rau would suit up in 24 games for the Panthers during the 2016-17 season, scoring twice and adding an assist. On July 1, 2017, as an unrestricted free agent, Rau signed with the Minnesota Wild.
