In his short period of time with the Knights, McKegg would be a key contributor in the teamís 2012 J. Ross Robertson Cup victory as the champions of the OHL. However his Memorial Cup quest would come just short as they would lose to the Shawinigan Cataractes in ovetime with a score of 2-1.

Once his OHL career was over the Maple Leafs would assign him to their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies. McKegg would play all of the 2012-14 season and most of the 2013-14 season with the Marlies. However, on February 1, 2014, McKegg would be promoted to the NHL to play for the Maple Leafs where he took part in a 6-3 win over the Ottawa Senators.

During the 2014-15 season, McKegg would only play three games for the Maple Leafs with the rest of his season being played in the AHL. After the season McKegg was traded to the Florida Panthers in exchange for Zach Hyman and a conditional draft pick.

McKegg would appear in 31 games for the Panthers during the 2016-17 season, scoring three goals and adding three assists, before his time with the club would come to an end. On February 27, 2017 he was waived by the Panthers and subsequently claimed by Tampa Bay and would finish the season with the Lightning. On July 1, 2017, as an unrestricted free agent, McKegg signed with the Pittsburgh Penguins.

In 26 games for the Penguins during the 2017-18 season, McKegg scored twice and added a pair of assists. At the NHL trade deadline, McKegg's time in the Pittsburgh organization would come to an end.
