Evgeny Kuznetsov was born on May 19, 1992 in Chelyabinsk, Russia. The 60 center was playing in the Kontinental Hockey League when he was drafted in the first round, 26th overall, by the Washington Capitals. Kuznetsov would play parts of five years for Traktor Chelyabinsk of the KHL before making the jump to North America to play for the Capitals.

At the end of the 2013-14 NHL regular season is when Kuznetsov would make his first appearance in the NHL. He scored his first NHL goal on March 25, 2014, shorthanded in a 5-4 shootout loss to the Los Angeles Kings. In 17 games he would score three goals and nine points to get his first taste of NHL action.

The following season, Kuznetsov did not disappoint in his first full season in North America. He would score 11 goals and 37 points in 80 games for the Capitals, leading them to a return to the playoffs after a one year absence. In his first taste of Stanley Cup Playoff action, Kuznetsov would score five goals and seven points taking the Capitals to the second round. After a long battle with the New York Rangers, the Capitals would eventually fall to them in seven games.

Kuznetsov would appear in all 82 games for the Capitals during the 2015-16 season. He reached the 20-goal mark for the first time in his career and added 57 assists for 77 points, all of which were career-highs.

In 2017-18, Kuznetsov would record 27 goals and add 56 assists for 83 points. He would continue his strong play into the playoffs where he led the Capitals with 32 points in 24 games, helping the club to the first Stanley Cup title in franchise history.

On the international stage, Kuznetsov has a powerful pedigree. He represented Russia twice at the World Junior Championship, capturing gold in 2011. Kuznetsov also represented Russia at the World Championship on numerous occasions, including gold medal victories in 2012 and 2014.
