Austin Watson was born January 13, 1992, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He played his junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League for first the Windsor Spitfires and then the Peterborough Petes. In his first season with Windsor he helped the Spitfires to the first Memorial Cup title in franchise history.

Watson was selected eighteenth overall at the 2010 NHL Entry Draft by the Nashville Predators. He would make his professional debut for the club's AHL affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals, during the playoffs following completion of his OHL season in 2011.

Watson would return to the Ontario Hockey League in 2011 and would find himself traded for the second time in his junior career. This time he was sent from the Petes to the powerful London Knights. He would appear in 29 games for the Knights, notching 35 points and help the club capture the J. Robertson Cup as the OHL champions.

In 2012-13, Watson would embark on his first full professional campaign. In 72 games with the Milwaukee Admirals he would impress offensively, reaching the 20 goal mark and adding 17 assists.

On the international stage Watson helped the United States capture gold at the 2010 IIHF World Under 18 Championship.
