Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Erik Gudbranson
Erik Gudbranson was born on January 7, 1992 in Orleans, Ontario. A standout defender from a young age, he was selected fourth overall in the 2008 OHL priority draft by the Kingston Frontenacs. In Kingston, Gudbranson continued to excel and he quickly became regarded as one of the top defenders in the Ontario Hockey League.

On the international stage Gudbranson served as captain of the silver medal-winning Canadian team at the 2011 World Junior Championships.

Gudbranson was selected third overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft and accomplished a rare feat, for a defenseman especially, when made the jump directly from junior to the NHL for the 2011-12 season. He would make his professional debut for the Panthers on opening night (October 8, 2011) and go on to appear in 72 games for the club, recording two goals and six assists to go along with 78 penalty minutes.

Gudbranson would grow into a steady and physical defensive player for the Panthers. In 2014-15 he established new career-highs in games played, goals, assists and points. He suited up on 76 games, found the back of the net four times and added nine assists for 13 points. During the 2015-16 season Gudbranson helped the Panthers qualify for the playoffs for the first time since 2012.

On May 25, 2016, Gudbranson’s time in Florida would come to an end. He was traded to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Jared McCann and a pair of draft picks. Injuries limited Gudbranson to just 30 games during his first season with Vancouver. The following season was more of the same for the big defenceman as he suited up in just 52 games.

During his third season with the Canucks, Gudbranson’s time in Vancouver would run out. He was traded at the NHL trade deadline to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Tanner Pearson.
