Dan Sexton was born on April 29, 1987 in Apple Valley, Minnesota. A product of Bowling Green University of the NCAA, Sexton was not drafted and signed with the Anaheim Ducks as a free agent in 2009.

Sexton made his professional debut for the Bakersfield Condors of the East Coast Hockey League during the 2009-10 season and would begin to gradually climb the ladder to the NHL. After 18 games with Bakersfield and 13 games for the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League, he finally got his first taste of life in the NHL on December 4, 2009 with the Anaheim Ducks. In all Sexton would appear in 41 games for the Ducks during the 2009-10 campaign, recording 9 goals and 10 assists.

Sexton would spend the better part of the next six seasons in the American Hockey League predominantly with the Ducks affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch. On March 11, 2013, his time in the Ducks organization would come to an end. He was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Kyle Wilson and join the Lightning's AHL affiliate, the Norfolk Admirals for the remainder of the season.

On July 9, 2013, Sexton inked a deal with TPS Turku of the Finnish Elite League.
