Eric Wellwood was born March 6, 1990 in Windsor, Ontario. A product of his hometown Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League, Wellwood was selected in the sixth round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Philadelphia Flyers.

Wellwood would make his professional debut in the American Hockey League in 2010-11 an impressed enough to earn his first shot in the NHL when the Flyer's recalled him of November 2010. He would see action in three games for the Flyers during the 2010-11 season and record the first point of his NHL career.
