Drew Shore was born on January 29, 1991, in Denver, Colorado. A product of the U.S. National Team Development Program, he was selected in the second round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Florida Panthers. He would then attend the University of Denver where he would blossom offensively in his second collegiate season, notching 46 points on 40 games.

Following his third year at the University of Denver, Shore opted to forgo his final year and signed an entry-level deal with the Panthers on March 27, 2012. He would join the Panthers' AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage for the late stages of the 2011-12 season, appearing in eight regular season games and nine post-season contests.

With the NHL locked out to start the 2012-13 season, Shore would once again start the year in the American League. He would score 10 goals and add 20 assists in 41 games for the Rampage before play resumed at the NHL level. Shore would make his NHL debut on January 22, 2013, for the Panthers and go on to appear in 43 games in total for the club, scoring three times and adding 10 assists.
