Louis Leblanc was born on January 26, 1991in Pointe-Claire, Quebec. Leblanc played minor hockey in the Montréal region before he moved to the United States in 2008, where he played one season with the Omaha Lancers of the United States Hockey League (USHL) and was named rookie of the year.

Leblanc was select in the first round (18th overall) of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft by the Montreal Canadiens. He then enrolled at the prestigious Harvard University where he spent one season and won Ivy League rookie of the year. He then joined the Montreal Juniors of the Quebec Major Junior League for the 2010-11 season.

Leblanc made his professional debut in the American Hockey League with the Hamilton Bulldogs and did not waste any time in making his presence felt. In first game he recorded three points in a Bulldogs 3-2 win over the Rochester Americans, which included scoring the overtime winner.

On November 30, 2011, Leblanc got his first taste of NHL action in a game against the Anaheim Ducks. He would go on to appear in 42 games for the Montreal Canadiens during the 2011-12 season, recording five goals and five assists.
