Travis Turnbull was born on July 7, 1986 in Chesterfield, Missouri. The son of former NHLer Perry Turnbull, Travis attended the University of Michigan, where in his third year he helped his team win the 2007-08 CCHA Championship.

Following his collegiate career Turnbull signed as an unrestricted free agent with the Buffalo Sabres and joined the club's AHL affiliate, the Portland Pirates. Turnbull would spend the majority of the next three seasons in the AHL, which included a move from Portland to Rochester when the Sabres changed their AHL affiliate.

During the 2011-12 season Turnbull would get his first taste of NHL action. He would appear in three games for the Sabres and record his first NHL goal.
