Undrafted, Lovejoy played one year for Boston College and three years for Dartmouth College of the NCAA. He graduated from Dartmouth with the class of 2007 and began his professional career with the Norfolk Admirals of the American Hockey League. That summer, Lovejoy signed an AHL contract with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

On July 7, 2008, Lovejoy signed an NHL contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. On December 7, 2008, Lovejoy was called up to the Penguins where he made his NHL debut on December 8, 2008, in a 4-3 loss against the Buffalo Sabres.

On April 11, 2009, Lovejoy received the 2nd team AHL All-Star award along with Most Valuable Defenseman. Lovejoy ended the regular 2008-09 campaign leading the entire AHL with a Plus/Minus rating of 42.

After the commencement of the shortened 2012-13 season, Lovejoy was traded on February 6, 2013, by the Penguins to the Anaheim Ducks for a 5th round draft pick in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft.

At the 2015 trade deadline, Lovejoy was traded back to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Simon Despres.

Missed majority of 2011-12 due to broken wrist, knee surgery and as a healthy reserve. Traded to Anaheim by Pittsburgh for Anaheim's 5th round pick (Anthony Angello) in 2014 NHL Draft, February 6, 2013. Traded to Pittsburgh by Anaheim for Simon Despres, March 2, 2015.
