Justin DiBenedetto was born on August 25, 1988 in Mississauga, Ontario. A standout in the Ontario Hockey League for the St. Michael's Majors and the Sarnia Sting, DiBenedetto was selected by the New York Islanders in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft.

Following his final junior season, DiBenedetto joined the Islanders' American Hockey League affiliate, the Bridgepoint Sound Tigers, for the 2009 playoffs.

DiBenedetto got his first taste of NHL action in 2010-11, appearing in 8 games for the Islanders and recording his first NHL point.
