Mark Olver was born on January 1, 1988 in Burnaby, British Columbia. A product of Northern Michigan University, Olver was selected in the fifth round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Colorado Avalanche.

Following his collegiate career, Olver would immediately join the Avalanche's AHL affiliate, the Lake Erie Monsters for the remainder of the 2009-10 season. The following season (2010-11) Olver would see action in 18 games for Colorado. Recording the first two goals of his NHL career and adding seven assists.
