James Wright was born on March 24, 1990 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Taken by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2008 NHL Draft, Wright was part of the Memorial Cup-winning Vancouver Giants club in 2007.

Wright surprised many by cracking the Lightning lineup for the start of the 2009-10 season and he made his NHL debut on October 3. 2009. After 48 games with the Lightning, where Wright collected a pair of goals, the young forward was sent back to his junior club in Vancouver for the remainder of the 2009-10 season.
