Zach Smith was born on April 5, 1988 in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan. In 2008, Smith was selected in the third round of the NHL Entry Draft by the Ottawa Senators.

After a junior career with the Swift Current Broncos of the WHL, Smith joined the Manitoba Moose of the AHL in 2008, appearing six playoff games. Smith was one of the Senators final cuts at their 2008-09 training camp and was assigned to the Binghamton Senators of the AHL, though he was recalled to the big club for a single game against the New York Islanders.

Smith would appear in all 82 games for the Senators during the 2013-14 season, recording 13 goals and adding nine assists for 22 points. In the 2015-16 season, Smith would establish a new career-high in goals with 25. His 36 points were also a career-best.
