Derek Stepan was born on June 18, 1990 in Hastings, Minnesota. A standout junior player, he attended the prestigious Shattuck-Saint Mary's as well as the University of Wisconsin. Prior to his first collegiate season, Stepan was selected in the round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the New York Rangers.

Known as a "character player," Stepan served as captain for the American team at the 2010 IIHF World U20 Championships. The USA squad would defeat Canada in overtime to capture the country's second gold medal in tournament history. For his part, Stepan led the tournament in scoring, recording four goals and 10 assists in seven games.

Following his second year at the University of Wisconsin, Stepan jumped directly to the NHL for the 2010-11 season. In his first NHL game Stepan scored a hat-trick against the Buffalo Sabres. In doing so he became the first Rangers player in history to accomplish the feat and just the fourth player in NHL history. He would go on to appear in all 82 games for the Rangers during the 2010-11 season, recording 21 goals and 24 assists.

Stepan follwed up his stellar rookie campaign with a strong sophomore season. Once again he would appear in all 82 games for the Rangers, recording 51 points to rank him among the Rangers' scoring leaders.

Stepan would reach the 20-goal mark for the first time during the 2015-16 season. He finished the year with 22 and added 31 assists for 53 points. Stepan appeared in 81 games for the Rangers during the 2016-17 season, scoring 17 times and establishing a new career-high with 55 points.

On June 23, 2017, Stepan's time in the Rangers organization would come to an end. He was traded to the Arizona Coyotes along with Antti Raanta in exchange for Anthony DeAngelo and a first round draft pick.

On the international stage, Stepan helped the United States to the gold medal at the 2010 World Junior Championship and also suited up for his homeland in the World Championship, Olympic Games and the World Cup of Hockey.
