Gregory Nemisz was born on June 5, 1990 in Courtice, Ontario. A standout for the Windsor Spitfires in the Ontario Hockey League, Nemisz was selected in the first round of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft by the Calgary Flames.

Nemisz made his professional debut in the American Hockey League with the Abbotsford Heat during the 2010-11 season. His play impressed Flames management and he was summoned to the NHL in March of 2011. He made his NHL debut on March 23 against the San Jose Sharks and would go on to appear in six games for Calgary.

Nemisz spent the majority of the 2011-12 season in Abbotsford and though shoulder injury sidelined him for over a month, he was recalled on several occasions and appeared in nine games for the Flames.
