Legends of Hockey -- NHL Player Search -- Player -- Teddy Purcell
Teddy Purcell was born September 8, 1985 in St. John's, Newfoundland. Undrafted, Purcell honed his skills in the USHL with the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders prior to his arrival at the University of Maine.

A highly talented winger with great hands, Purcell led all Hockey East rookies in scoring with 16 goals, 27 assists for 43 points. In his only season at the University of Maine, he helped the Black Bears to their second consecutive appearance in The Frozen Four and was named the Hockey East Rookie of the Year.

On April 27, 2007, Purcell was signed as a free agent by the Los Angeles Kings. He was assigned to their AHL affiliate in Manchester where he simply dominated as a rookie. In only 67 games, the St. John's, Newfoundland native tallied 25 goals and 58 assists for 83 points, good for third best in league scoring. Purcell's offensive contribution in Manchester led to his appearance in ten games through the Kings 2007-08 regular season.

On March 3, 2010, the NHL trade deadline, Purcell was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for veteran forward Jeff Halpern.

Purcell played five seasons with the Lightning, his best coming in 2011-12 where he scored 24 goals, with 41 assists for 65 points. All were career-bests. On June 29, 2014, he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers in exchange for Sam Gagner.

In his first season with Edmonton, Purcell would appear in all 82 games. He scored 12 times and added 22 assists and the club once again finished on the outside of the playoffs. In the days leading up to the 2016 NHL trade deadline, Purcell was shipped to the Florida Panthers in exchange for a third round draft pick. Purcell would finish the season with the Panthers and in the summer of 2016, as an unrestricted free agent, sign with the Los Angeles Kings.
