Joe Piskula was born July 5, 1984 in Antigo, Wisconsin. Undrafted, Piskula was signed as an unrestricted free agent by the Los Angeles Kings on March 21, 2007.

A defensive defenceman, Piskula spent three years at the University of Wisoncsin-Madison anchoring the club's blue-line prior to signing a three-year entry level contract with the Los Angeles Kings. He would make his NHL debut with the Kings on March 23, 2007 just days after appearing in the WCHA Final Five third-place game.
