Rod Pelley was born September 1, 1984 in Kitimat, British Columbia. Undrafted, Pelley honed his skills with Ohio State in the CCHA.

An energetic forward, Pelley through four years at Ohio State helped guide the Buckeeys to three NCAA Tournament appearances. Serving as alternate captain in both his senior and junior years, Pelley wrapped up his stint with the Buckeyes in 2005-06. The New Jersey Devils opted to sign the Kitimat, B.C. native as a free agent on July 17, 2006.

Pelly completed a successful season with the Devils' AHL affiliate in Lowell after appearing in 65 games with the club. He was the team's leading rookie scorer and was called up in nine games with the New Jersey Devils.
